I grew up wanting to be a missionary and almost got the chance but I blew it away. I guess that just wasn't my calling. But now that I've raised my family and have the time to spare, I'm once again finding myself on a mission but this time it's to help bring wellness to the world.

What I Need To Know About Irritable Bowel SyndromeSaturday, December 29, 2007

Here is some basic information on Irritable Bowel Syndrome, what it is and what you can do for it.

What I need to know about Irritable Bowel Syndrome

On this page:

What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?

Irritable bowel syndrome* (IBS) is a “syndrome,” meaning a group of symptoms. The most common symptoms of IBS are abdominal pain or discomfort often reported as cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and/or constipation. IBS affects the colon, or large bowel, which is the part of the digestive tract that stores stool.

IBS is not a disease. It’s a functional disorder, meaning that the bowel doesn’t work, or function, correctly.

Words in bold type are defined in the glossary

What causes IBS?

Doctors are not sure what causes IBS. The nerves and muscles in the bowel appear to be extra sensitive in people with IBS. Muscles may contract too much when you eat. These contractions can cause cramping and diarrhea during or shortly after a meal. Or the nerves may react when the bowel stretches, causing cramping or pain.

IBS can be painful. But it does not damage the colon or other parts of the digestive system. IBS does not lead to other health problems.

What are the symptoms of IBS?

The main symptoms of IBS are

  • abdominal pain or discomfort in the abdomen, often relieved by or associated with a bowel movement
  • chronic diarrhea, constipation, or a combination of both

Other symptoms are

  • whitish mucus in the stool
  • a swollen or bloated abdomen
  • the feeling that you have not finished a bowel movement

Women with IBS often have more symptoms during their menstrual periods.

How is IBS diagnosed?

The doctor may suspect that you have IBS because of your symptoms. Specific symptoms, called the Rome criteria, can be used to more accurately make this diagnosis. Medical tests may also be done to make sure you don’t have any other health problems that cause the same symptoms.

Doctor and Patient.

Medical Tests for IBS

In addition to a physical exam and blood tests, the following tests might be done to diagnose IBS:

  • Lower gastrointestinal (GI) series. This test uses x rays to diagnose problems in the large intestine. It is also called a barium enema x ray. Before you have the x ray, the doctor will put barium into your large intestine through the anus—the opening where stool leaves the body. Barium is a thick liquid that makes your intestines show up better on the x ray.

  • Colonoscopy. For this test the doctor inserts a long, thin tube, called a colonoscope, into your anus and up into your colon. The tube has a light and tiny lens on the end. The doctor can view the inside of your colon on a big television screen. In some cases, a shorter tube, called a flexible sigmoidoscope, is used to look at just the lower portion of the colon.

How is IBS treated?

IBS has no cure, but you can do things to relieve symptoms. Treatment may involve

  • diet changes
  • medicine
  • stress relief

You may have to try a few things to see what works best for you. Your doctor can help you find the right treatment plan.

Diet Changes

Some foods and drinks make IBS worse.

Foods and drinks that may cause or worsen symptoms include

  • fatty foods, like french fries
  • milk products, like cheese or ice cream
  • chocolate
  • alcohol
  • caffeinated drinks, like coffee and some sodas
  • carbonated drinks, like soda

Coffee, french fries, and ice cream sundae.
These foods may make IBS worse.

To find out which foods are a problem, keep a diary that tracks

  • what you eat during the day
  • what symptoms you have
  • when symptoms occur
  • what foods always make you feel sick

Woman making list.

Take your notes to the doctor to see if certain foods trigger your symptoms or make them worse. If so, you should avoid eating these foods or eat less of them.

Some foods make IBS better.

Fiber may reduce the constipation associated with IBS because it makes stool soft and easier to pass. However, some people with IBS who have more sensitive nerves may feel a bit more abdominal discomfort after adding more fiber to their diet. Fiber is found in foods such as breads, cereals, beans, fruits, and vegetables.

Examples of foods with fiber include

Fruits Vegetables Breads, cereals, and beans
apples
peaches
broccoli (raw)
cabbage
carrots (raw)
peas
kidney beans
lima beans
whole-grain bread
whole-grain cereal

Add foods with fiber to your diet a little at a time to let your body get used to them. Too much fiber at once can cause gas, which can trigger symptoms in a person with IBS.

Your doctor may ask you to add more fiber to your diet by taking a fiber pill or drinking water mixed with a special high-fiber powder.

Woman drinking a water-fiber mixture.

Eat small meals.

Large meals can cause cramping and diarrhea in people with IBS. If this happens to you, try eating four or five small meals a day instead of less-frequent big meals.

Man eating less.

Medicine

The doctor may give you medicine to help with symptoms.

  • Laxatives treat constipation. Many kinds of laxatives are available. Your doctor can help you find the laxative that is right for you.
  • Antispasmodics control spasms in the colon and help ease abdominal pain.
  • Antidepressants, even in lower doses than are used for treating depression, can help people with IBS. They can help reduce the abdominal discomfort or pain associated with IBS and, depending on the type chosen, may help the diarrhea or constipation.

Woman taking medicine.

Another drug is sometimes prescribed for the treatment of IBS. Alosetron hydrochloride (Lotronex) is for women with severe IBS whose main symptom is diarrhea. Because it can cause serious side effects, Lotronex is only used if other medicines do not work.

You need to follow your doctor’s instructions when you use the medicine. Otherwise, you may need to keep taking it in order to have a bowel movement. Talk with your doctor about potential side effects and what to do if you experience them.

[Top]

Does stress cause IBS?

Emotional stress does not cause IBS. But people with IBS may have their bowels react more to stress. So, if you already have IBS, stress can make your symptoms worse.

Stress Relief

Learning to reduce stress can help with IBS. With less stress, you may find you have less cramping and pain. You may also find it easier to manage your symptoms.

Woman walking dog.

Meditation, exercise, hypnosis, and counseling may help. You may need to try different activities to see what works best for you.

[Top]

Points to Remember

  • IBS means your bowel doesn’t work the right way.
  • IBS can cause cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation.
  • IBS doesn’t damage the bowel or lead to other health problems.
  • The doctor will diagnose IBS based on your symptoms. You may need to have medical tests to rule out other health problems.
  • Stress doesn’t cause IBS, but it can make your symptoms worse.
  • Fatty foods, milk products, chocolate, alcohol, and caffeinated and carbonated drinks can trigger symptoms.
  • Eating foods with fiber and eating small meals throughout the day may reduce symptoms.
  • Treatment for IBS may include medicine, stress relief, and changes in eating habits.

How To Use Leverage To Multiply Your Income TenfoldMonday, December 10, 2007
How to Use Leverage to Multiply Your Income Ten Fold

If you have not heard the term leverage already, let me explain briefly
what it is.

It is the power to act effectively using existing knowledge, money or
something else in a manner that results in a chain reaction of greater
success.  For example, using the same effort to find joint venture
partners and affiliates could end up in multiple sales rather than one
sale at a time.

You first need to determine the tasks that you need to concentrate on to
build your own business and determine what actions are needed to achieve
these tasks.

Then think of ways that you can incorporate leverage into these tasks to
make sure your actions are as effective as possible.

If you look at the reality of things, you are never going to get
anywhere very fast if you decide to take on every business task
yourself, in fact you are likely to get bogged down very fast, so the
way to leverage this is to outsource.

You can only manage so many actions a day - you must decide what you are
best at and outsource the rest.

Now to begin with, you may not be able to afford to pay other people to
do things for you. To deal with this, see if you can get your friends,
family or neighbors to help you, you can return the favor at a later
date when you are rolling in it!

If you don't know anyone who can help, then you are going to have to,
excuse the phrase, network your ass off!

You can do this by networking on forums, searching on the Internet for
people owning related websites, browsing social networking sites and
emailing your favorite marketers for advice. Get to know people, build
relationships with them; you never know what the outcome will be unless
you try.

The art of leverage can also be used to build your traffic, as mentioned
earlier finding joint ventures and affiliates are ways of getting more
traffic to your site with the same effort as going for one sale.
Continuing to contact people on a daily basis, offering your assistance,
support and friendship will build mutually satisfying relationships that
alone could help multiply your income ten-fold!

Remember you can leverage actions to get good results but leveraging
excuses isn't going to get you anywhere.

You Know Your Info Product Could be the Next Hot Seller. Now Make Sure
It Is!

To start with you need to be prepared to put some effort in, as we all
know nothing comes for easy but following this system will make the ride
a whole lot smoother.

First you must have achievable goals and stick to them like the
proverbial glue. A general plan without goals is like wandering around a
maze in circles and its unlikely youll find your way out.

So plan out things like, how many sales you want to achieve in a
day/week/month and set daily actions in place to help you get there.
Never forget your goal is your end target and that you can achieve it.

One of the main pieces of advice I can give you is dont go for one sale
at a time.  By putting all the effort you use for one sale into finding
a joint venture will give you multiple sales for the same amount of work.

Spend the majority of your days trying to find joint venture partners
for your product instead of places you can put ads that attract one or
two sales.   The same principle applies when finding affiliates for your
product.  Yes you must have an affiliate program because if you dont
you are leaving a whole lot of cash on the table.

Although some additional marketing presence can be achieved by writing
articles, having a signature on your email or forum posts and creating
press releases so dont desert this route altogether. These particular
methods might even attract joint venture partners and relationships that
can be developed.

Another great thing to try is find a mentor.  It is one of the best
things you can do to help yourself, as they will guide you and give you
impartial advice in every type of business decision you have.  They can
fast track you to success without the steep learning curve.

Remember mentors have mentors too, so that you can get a whole wealth of
information filtered right through from the biggest Internet Gurus down
to new people coming onto the Internet fold,

Lastly a great that tip that will serve you well is treat your website
like a business not a hobby, as investments in things like decent sales
copy will have a massive impact on overall sales.  If you dont have the
kind of money available to buy this, you could offer your time,
services, and products as payment for it.

As with anything in life, if you dont try, you wont get what you want.
Never stop trying and that success will be within your grasp very soon.

Resource Box:

Every now and again an ebook will appear on your computer screen and
make it crystal clear what you need to do to be successful.  It's not
very often that they are free and contain this invaluable information
but you can find such an ebook here http://www.postlaunchprofits.com/special/?thankyou-page=7613

My Ads Don't Work So I Don't Do Them Any MoreThursday, December 6, 2007

My Ads Don’t Work, So I don’t Do Them Any More

By Alan Boyer

Does that make sense? Yet, that is what I hear from a lot of prospective clients.

What that is saying is, “My Marketing Doesn’t Work So I’ll Never Do That Again!” (I’ve actually heard that statement).

Most small businesses don’t understand how to make it work, so they dip their toe in, try it, and when they don’t get what they expect, they leave to never try it again. Yet, generating exactly the number of leads you need every week is not only achievable but rather easy if you understand the principles and failure to understand them results in an 80% failure rate among most small businesses.

Critical Goals (The Keys: Guaranteed success, vs. Highly Probable Failure)

There are a few critical goals and measurements we track in a business. These typically are:
• The number of leads generated weekly (comes from our marketing plan, advertising, networking, referrals, etc.)
• The number of closed sales, and dollars in closed sales every week
• Number of completed jobs (customers, projects, etc), total dollars generated, and profit (gross profit) generated per job every week.

And finally the bottom line generated by the key measurement results above.
• Total dollars sold for the year, profit generated for the year.
• Does the profit generated by your sales pay your overhead.
• After overhead is paid how much extra is generated that goes in your pocket as “net profit.”

The definition of “critical” goals: a goal that IF accomplished will result in
• The total dollars of revenue for the year, the overhead is paid, and having a specific defined number of dollars to put in your pocket.
And IF these goals ARE NOT achieved the consequences will be:
• The total dollars of revenue WILL NOT be reached
• You will likely not be paying overhead and the money will be SUCKED out of your pocket instead of putting it into the pocket.
• AND the biggest consequence, you just entered the high probability that your entire business will fail.

Now that we’ve set the ground work for what critical goals will do for you if you achieve them, and what will be the consequences if you don’t, this leaves us with a rule I give all of my clients:
Critical goals are something that YOU WILL do no matter what.

It's likely that there are 50-60 other things pulling on you to get done, but since these 5-6 things are SO CRITICAL (success on one side, failure on the other), then NOTHING else is more important. Stop doing the trivial many and focus on the 5-6 critical things that WILL deliver results, guaranteed.

When it comes to a critical goal that appears difficult, our response to that will not be “CAN’T” but rather “HOW?”

Now back to our original statement that

My Ads Don’t Work, So I don’t Do Them Any More

Isn’t lead generation, the leads that come from our ads, one of our critical goals
To generate X number of leads EVERY WEEK.

And our rule was Make it happen no matter what, it’s not CAN’T but HOW?

If our ads are not delivering what we expected, shouldn’t we be figuring out HOW to make them work instead of saying “they don’t work so I’ll never do that again.” We just said CAN’T instead of How. The opposite of our ground rule.

Is business really that simple? Just deliver the Critical Goals?
You bet!

How to fix the ad response rates

For most ads I find these are the critical factors:
1) Who we are communicating to
2) What we are saying
3) How we are saying it (and How must be about the benefit of the product, not the name, specifications, features, and especially not about WHO WE ARE.)

I’ve seen ad response rates jump 10 times on the very next advertisement just from following these ground rules and developing the answers to these questions.

Fibromyalgia and Massage TherapyWednesday, December 5, 2007
About every 6 weeks I go to a nationally certified massage therapist for a full massage. She uses a variety of techniques. I have a lot of pressure points and/or very tender, sore areas. She applies pressure on some areas, uses a technique she calls "unwinding" the muscle knots, stretches my muscles, and uses drainage of the lymph nodes. The therapy is painful, since I have fibromyalgia, but it seems to help loosen things up. If I have a stiff neck and headache, the work she does in that area definitely helps my headache.

I am wondering what results others with fibromyalgia experience if they have massage therapy.

Maintaining a Positive Attitude: Ten Strategies (for Fibromyalgia Patients)Tuesday, November 20, 2007
I try to maintain a positive attitude in spite of fibromyalgia and arthritis pain and physical limitations. This article gives 10 pointers for how to keep your attitude positive.

Maintaining a Positive Attitude: Ten Strategies

.

"Have a positive attitude." How many times have we heard that one? While our emotions can not cause fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, they no doubt affect our symptoms. But how can we maintain good thoughts when our bodies feel so lousy? This challenge, of course, does not pertain exclusively to chronic illness, but to any time when things do not go as we wish. But in the case of ongoing illness, seeing the positive presents a continuous struggle.

Yet our moods are not perfectly correlated with our physical state. Most likely we can all recall times that despite much pain or fatigue, we were able to cope and even achieve high spirits. Perhaps the weather was perfect, good friends visited, we just accomplished something or helped somebody, making us feel good about ourselves. Other times, depression seems to take hold even when our physical discomfort is at a manageable level. Why is this? Answering this question is the key to finding optimism.

To me, the vicissitudes of fibromyalgia feel like a swim in the turbulent sea -- sometimes it seems we have fallen and the waves continue to crash on our heads, as we fight to rise, only to be knocked down yet again. But that same ocean sometimes allows us to find a wave we can ride smoothly to the shore.

What can we do when we feel under the waves? How can we find the strength to climb back on top, and the patience to know that we will? Here are ten cognitive exercises I use to maintain the most positive attitude I can:

1. Expect bumps! It is important to acknowledge that we will sometimes feel down. Who wouldn't in our condition? But by expecting rather than dreading down time, such periods become more tolerable. In addition, recognizing that we will have blue periods helps keep them in perspective. We will be able to say to ourselves, "I was depressed before, and got out of it; this time, too, it will pass." It is easy to forget that before our illness, there were times we felt down. Now these periods are wrapped up in our medical problems; but everyone gets depressed some of the time. After accepting that we will sometimes feel sad, and even experience self pity, we can concentrate on ways to shorten these periods and make them fewer and farther between.

2. Track the changes. Keeping track of moods helps put ups and downs into perspective. During your best times, make a conscious attempt to capture the feeling. Leave notes on your wall attesting to the way you feel. Living with chronic illness easily creates a Jekyll-and-Hyde persona, where your optimistic self and your flare-up self are not sufficiently acquainted. When we feel bad, it becomes quite difficult to imagine that things can be otherwise. Similarly, during times of improvement, it's amazing how quickly we may forget how bad a previous period was, making subsequent flare-ups not only intolerable but shocking. Counting and measuring the duration of the bad times -- as well as the good ones -- can put them into perspective. It may be that over time, our worst occurs about once a month, although it feels much more frequent. This knowledge is empowering, because we can remind ourselves that a bad flare is, for example, our monthly temporary setback, and find ways to ride it out until our baseline returns.

3. Stockpile fun distractions. We all need to keep lists handy of the things that make us happy. One of the cruelties of our condition is that when we need distractions most, we are least equipped to seek them out. For this reason it is important to compile a list of our favorite activities when we are feeling optimistic to be used when we most need them. People with fibromyalgia often describe how even their worst pain can be put on a back burner, so to speak, when they become engrossed in an activity. This is not only a psychological but a physiological response: our brains can only process so much input at once. When we are engrossed in a beautiful movie, talking to a good friend on the phone, or listening to our favorite music while lying on a heating pad or in the bathtub, we can trick our pain receptors into leaving us alone! Meanwhile improvements in spirit have an added impact on our entire well-being. Laughter is good medicine; while dwelling on our troubles tends to compound them.

4. Shape your perspective. Is the glass half empty or half full? Perspective determines, quite literally, how we view the world. Having a chronic illness creates an ambiguous construction of reality for us. Am I, for example, a successful cripple or an unsuccessful professional? In American culture, much emphasis is placed on independence, individualism, and achievement. Through this lens, developing a condition that makes us feel more dependent and less productive is likely to be a huge disappointment. Yet as we get older, it becomes more likely that we, or somebody close to us, will experience debilitating problems. People are often forced to adapt to sudden, new conditions by adopting a perspective that accommodates change. Our perspectives are shaped by the comparisons we make and the expectations they create. Consider, for example, the immigrant who had been practicing medicine in his home country, but flees to the US to escape a repressive political regime. Here he works as a janitor; after years of medical study, he has lost a prestigious and rewarding occupation. Yet he is thankful for the opportunity to work and wakes each day driven by hope, perhaps, of a better future for his children. Yet his difficulties are also quite apparent. What keeps his spirits up and makes him thankful rather than bitter? His perspective.

5. Create a new self. If we hang on tightly to the "old self" we were, finding the value of our "new self" becomes increasingly difficult. (We may even exaggerate how fit that person was: "I didn't need any sleep, I never felt bad, I could do anything!"). This does not mean we should totally discard our previous conception of self; rather, we need to find a way to integrate the two. In other words, we should seek to find in our new bodies new ways to enjoy and experience the things that we had done before. Consider all the aspects of yourself that you like, and the things that you most want to do; then step by step, find ways to achieve as many of these as you can. At the same time, recognize that our expectations must shift so that we can once again meet them.

6. Don't forget the good stuff. While the physical symptoms of fibromyalgia can feel all-encompassing, there are other parts of our life--our social relationships, passions, family -- that also exist. By focusing on the positive aspects of our life, we become more aware of how many there are: the friends that stuck by us, the things we still enjoy, and the accomplishments we have been able to make, however small, under very different conditions. Because each task now represents a challenge, we should celebrate whatever we manage to accomplish. As we have been told many times, if we shorten the list and pace ourselves whatever we do eventually adds up to something to be very proud of.

7. "Oy, it could be worse." (The Jewish mantra). As comparisons shape our view, it is helpful to find comparisons that will provide a fuller appreciation for what has befallen us. OK, the "eat because children are starving in (fill in the developing country)" did not work for you as a child. But try to think of it this way: Many bad things happen in the world. The odds are that some of them will happen to us. Not because of anything that we have done, but because, as the saying goes, **** happens. It takes only a short view of the evening news to remind ourselves of the horrors occurring every day. So, this is what has happened to us. We too were caught. Let us examine what we have: (a) We know our condition is not terminal, so we need not begin contemplating our pending mortality. (b) As bad as we sometimes feel, our underlying condition is not going to get worse. We have already experienced the worst, and, to our credit, have gotten through it. (c) Although few people achieve permanent remission, many improve significantly. As we understand how our actions and emotions influence our general well-being, we can find ways to partake in more and more activities.

8. Keep the hope alive! There is so much room for hope. It has only been since the 1990s that our condition has acquired any legitimacy from the medical community. We are in a far better position than the generations before us who suffered without ever receiving validation. We know much more about the important roles of exercise, medication, stretching, pacing and meditation to bring relief and a sense of control. Furthermore, as medical research increases, it is only a matter of time before better therapies (and perhaps even a cure!) are introduced.

9. Lean on me! A single most important predictor of how we do is the support network we create. We certainly appreciate what it means when someone helps us when we feel especially lousy. Make sure that, within your means, you continue to be a good friend to those you care about. We still have lots to give. During a good moment, write to a friend that you are thinking about her. Help your family and friends find ways to maintain their relationship with you. Invite them to your place to eliminate traveling (and do not worry what your place looks like! They came to see you, not your housecleaning abilities). Try to be open with family members, while at the same time supportive of their needs. Put yourself in their shoes as often as possible -- it can be scary to have someone you love be sick! Also make sure to seek help outside of your immediate circle so as not to drain your closest friends and family. There are now all sorts of support groups, both live and in virtual computer space.

10. Indulge whenever you can. We have lots of time to focus on our thoughts. Most people do not have the luxury of taking time to relax and think. OK, we did not ask for these "time outs." They are demanded by the needs of our bodies. Nevertheless, we have control over how we use this extra time. Instead of dwelling on what our bodies are not doing, give your fantasy full liberty. Turn these rest periods around to be indulgent time. In our mental playground, we can practice dance steps we used to know (for there will be some times we can dance!). We can use the time to think through problems we face and how we want to spend time when we are feeling ready, or we can analyze a movie we recently saw, say prayers, or mentally write a letter to a friend. The article you are now reading is a product of a spell in the middle of the night, when I lay in bed, unable to sleep. After taking steps to make myself more comfortable, I decided to think about what I would write next. I figured that if I fell asleep, great! But if not, I'd have thought through my next article. It was about this point when I, satisfied, went off to dreamland.

Understanding Fibromyalgia TreatmentTuesday, November 20, 2007
Here is an interesting article on fibromyalgia from WebMD.

Understanding Fibromyalgia - Treatment

How Do I Know If I Have It?

Before fibromyalgia treatment can begin a doctor must diagnose the condition.

Some experts think that fibromyalgia is underdiagnosed.  It can be difficult to diagnose because many of its symptoms are the same as those of other conditions, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, underactive thyroid, Lyme disease, lupus, and multiple chemical sensitivity.  Fibromyalgia is usually diagnosed after other possible causes have been ruled out.

To diagnose fibromyalgia, your doctor will take a thorough history and do physical and neurological exams.  He or she may order laboratory tests to rule out other conditions.  They will also determine whether you have any tender points, the key distinguishing symptom of fibromyalgia.  Some doctors use the American College of Rheumatology guidelines that require a minimum of 11 out of 18 tender points for a fibromyalgia diagnosis.  Others believe that fewer than 11 tender points may indicate fibromyalgia, particularly if you also have severe fatigue and widespread pain that has lasted more than three months.

Because of the difficulty in diagnosing fibromyalgia, it is best to see a doctor who is knowledgeable about the condition, such as a rheumatologist.  Diagnosis is important because the earlier fibromyalgia is detected, the sooner you can make lifestyle changes to reduce the symptoms.

What Are the Treatments?

There is no cure for fibromyalgia, and people with the condition usually have it for life.  However, it is not likely to get worse as you age and it does not damage your muscles, tendons, or ligaments.  Many people are able to reduce their symptoms with a combination of exercise, medication, physical therapy and relaxation.

Lifestyle Choices

A vital part of treating fibromyalgia is frequent, low-impact aerobic exercise.  Examples include walking, biking, water aerobics, and swimming.  Exercise tends to reduce pain and tenderness and to improve muscle fitness and sleep.  Stretching is also important and may help reduce stiffness and pain.

At first, pain and fatigue may make it difficult for you to exercise.  Keep in mind that persisting with an exercise routine may reduce your symptoms, while becoming unfit may make symptoms worse.  If you have not exercised recently, be sure to talk with your doctor before you begin an exercise program, and start slowly.  Your doctor or a physical therapist can help you work up to 20 to 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week.

Better-quality sleep may also help reduce fibromyalgia symptoms.  Low-dose tricyclic antidepressants help relieve sleep problems and pain in many people with fibromyalgia.  Also, try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day; some people notice that their symptoms get worse when they stay up just an hour or two later than usual.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine.  These disrupt deep, restorative sleep and may aggravate your symptoms.

Relaxation techniques can help relieve muscle tension and reduce stress.  Evaluating the causes of stress and learning new ways to cope may also lessen symptoms.

Medication

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen, naproxen, ketoprofen, and aspirin) or other pain medication (such as Ultram) may help relieve muscle pain.  For a particularly tender area, your health care provider may inject a local anesthetic to provide relief that typically lasts about two to three month

At-Home Remedies

Applying heat or cold packs to painful areas may relieve symptoms temporarily. Staying warm and improving your posture may also help. Reducing stress may reduce symptoms and may even eliminate them in mild cases. Pace yourself with work, household chores, and social activities -- don't take on too much.

Take a proactive role in learning about fibromyalgia to help control it, and be vigilant about following your treatment plan.  Emotional support is very important, too.  Living with fibromyalgia may be difficult if your family, friends, or employer do not understand the condition.  Seek out supportive family, friends, clergy, support groups or a mental health counselor.

Business and YouThursday, October 25, 2007
Here is an article for women on how to start your business by being different, not by being a copycat.
Good advice for us females!

                        Women in Business

Business And You
by Debbie Solomon

What is the Hottest and Most Achieved Phenomenon going on in the
cyberworld today? YOU GOT IT!.....Starting your Own Business!

It is so much easier to start your own business these days. You do not
need $1,000's of dollars of overhead just to get started. Most people
these days only need a computer with internet access. There are more home
businesses starting everyday. The percentage rate is increasing faster
than Gas prices are rising. THAT IS BIG!!!

So, now you realize the concerns so many people are now encountering.
With Home businesses increasing so rapidly, how are YOU going to compete
with that?  That is Keyword...COMPETE! It is a dog eat dog world out
there and everyone is out to get a piece of that American Dream.

How can you beat the competition? Get to know them. Once you have your
business plan laid out, your product line in order...the next step is to
research your competition. See what they are
doing. Get ideas, write them down. A lot of businesses are giving away
FREEBIES. Everyone loves Freebies. Can't go wrong with that.  Look for
FREEBIES that NO other competitor has. Look for specials that will
enhance your product line. Be DIFFERENT! The main reason you research
other competitors is to do exactly the opposite.  Sound strange? The last
thing you want to do is to be like your competitors. Why are they going
to buy from you when someone else has the same thing?

A Word Of Warning.....Do NOT be a COPYCAT!!! You will notice a lot of
competitors with great graphics, great selling strategies and a great
site. This does NOT mean you will be able just copy what they do! I see
so much of that and it is sad. How will you be DIFFERENT if you do what
everyone else is doing? You can have a very common product, add some
twists to it and have one of the highest traffic generated sites for that
target market.

But where do you come up with these ideas and twists? It is called
surfing the NET! You will be amazed of what you can find out there. Here
are some example of being DIFFERENT:

**FREE E-Books is Great...but very common.  The Twist....Write Your OWN E-
Book. Share your experience.

**Give away FREE Vacations. There are tons of company's that are striving
to have businesses
market them on their site in exchange for FREE Vacations.  The Twist....
Look for a different kind of Vacation giveaway.  Not only an island
giveaway. Look for a unique vacation setting.

**Collect helpful Tools that are related to your product or service and
Give them away.
The Twist...Create a Members only site with these tools and offer FREE
Access.

**Write your own newsletter. The Twist...ADD Humor!

**Start your own Discussion Forum relating to your product line or
service. Offer help!
The Twist....Offer everyone in the forum a FREEBIE just for joining in on
the discussion!

Are you getting the idea? All these ideas are very common.  But none of
them are your own. Add those twists. It will keep you energized. It will
excite your prospects.

Owning a business online or offline can really be boring if you let it.
SO DON'T LET IT! Use your imagination.

Your business is YOURS! NO one else's. NO one can tell you what you can
and cannot do. Create your dreams!  Have the business you love and most
of all just ENJOY IT!

Why Use Keywords and Keyword Phrases?Friday, October 19, 2007
Here is another valuable article from Cody Moya on how to improve your website.

.:FEATURED ARTICLE:.

Why Use Keywords and Keyword Phrases?

By Cody Moya

Keywords are a venerable institution on the web. Long ago, when AOL was one of the lone pioneers (along with Compuserve - remember them?), they catalogued websites by using keywords.

At first, you told AOL what you wanted your keyword to be; later, they sold keywords to you. That keyword, whether it was roses or dogs or computer software, was the most important search method on the Internet.

Then Alta Vista, the web's first search engine, came along. It catalogued pages by the phrases it found in the metatags in the header of the web page. (Metatags are places you can put keywords and descriptive phrases and not have them show up on the web page itself.) This worked pretty well for a while

Then people found out you could abuse the metatags. Webmasters who ran adult sites would simply look for the most popular search terms online and put them in the metatags.

No matter that dolphin, cooking equipment, and running shoes had little or nothing to do with the content on their pages - they'd use them simply because it caused their rankings in search engines to go up.

This was the birth of keywords as we know them.

Keywords and Keyword Phrases

Keywords and keyword phrases are words and/or phrases the search engines look for when they catalog your site. Search engines only work if they can return relevant content to the people who are using them to search, so it's very much in their interest to find articles that go well with the search terms people insert in the search box.

Search engines look for keywords in several places:

- In the metatags at the beginning of a web page
- Within the header tags of a web page
- In the body of text on a web page, especially in the first paragraph and the last paragraph

If your page is about cooking, for instance, you want to look for keywords like cooking, recipes, utensils, ingredients, etc. to trigger the search engines to properly catalog the web page.

And you want to put in enough keywords that the search engine will understand that this is an important page on that topic, not just mentioning the keyword; yet not so many keywords that your content is unreadable for the people who browse to it.

Most keyword article writers think between 3% and 7% of your words being keywords or keyword phrases is optimal.

If you have trouble doing this yourself, you can always look at purchasing private label rights articles. These are articles produced in bulk about topics you can share with customers visiting your website.

When you purchase private label rights articles, they're already keyword optimized, and you have the option of modifying them in any way you please. It's also an inexpensive way of getting good content on your website.

Even specially-optimized keyword articles aren't perfect, though. You may optimize content, only to find that your site is not ranking high at all with the keywords you want.

There are several other variables that can affect search engines (though the exact recipe they use to determine where your page falls is a closely-guarded secret, and it changes periodically anyway).

How Search Engines Work

Search engines use a text-based algorithm to determine where your site falls in their rankings, part of which depends on the keywords you use, where in your document you use them, and how they're used. But they look at keywords in another place as well: the links that connect to your site.

If you've participated in link exchanges with other webmasters or if you've donated articles to article directories, search engines will observe and record these links.

If your main keyword is not in these links, you've wasted your time developing the links and the content. But if your keyword is included in the links in some way, it will strengthen your website's relationship with that keyword.

This is one of the most powerful search engine tools you have. Use it.

In addition, search engines check to see if you've updated your content recently, and whether the content you're providing is very similar or the same as content on another page.

Frequent updates will raise your search engine ranking. Content that looks like another site, whether you've been plagiarized or not, can lower your ranking or eliminate it entirely.

Private label rights articles are a good way to maintain a bank of continually-fresh content for your page that's pre-optimized. Even if you like to write content yourself, it's good to have a few around for heavy times like Christmas season, when you may run out of your own articles.

And that's really about all there is to it.

One More Thing

When you optimize your site for the search engines, be certain you retain its ease of use for humans, too. That's who it's written for.

And a number 1 rated site, no matter how content-rich or how hard you've worked to improve its ranking, is absolutely worthless if your viewers look at it and then click away.

Using Clean Content Design to Improve Your Website StickinessFriday, October 19, 2007
Here are some pointers from Cody Moya on how to improve your website.

.:FEATURED ARTICLE:.

Using Clean Content Design to Improve Your Website Stickiness

By Cody Moya

Have you ever watched someone use your website? Do they seem to find what they want right away and either click it or start scrolling down?

Or do they get distracted, sidetracked, have trouble and ultimately get bored?

If your answer is the second, you've got a problem.

Fixing Your Website

Whether your website is hard to read, too wordy, too laden with images, or just laid out poorly, you can fix it. Website stickiness is the quality to a website that holds viewers there, encouraging them with one-more-interesting-item to remain at your website; the longer they stick to your website, the better your chances of making some money.

Just like with tape, your website's stickiness is better if it's not cluttered with other stuff. If you're running other people's banner ads on your site, now is the time to stop. Banner ads are distracting and often unpredictable.

With slow computer speeds, the ones with multiple animations (you know who you are, Low Rates!) will lock up a page so that it doesn't load at all.

Worse, if you're selling ad space on your website to a service that sends up ads to random but similar services, you may be advertising competitors on your website without knowing it - even if the service promises this won't happen!

So eliminate the banners now. If you have large graphics (anything that is larger than 50 K is large), animations, or Flash, lose them now, or move them off your home page.

Use the simplest possible web design: a menu across the top, a menu across the bottom, and three columns between the menus, keeping the bulk of your content in the center column, where most people look. Don't use huge graphics at the top of the page.

Newspapers have a philosophy called above-the-fold. This means that the real estate of the paper on the front page above the fold should hold the best and most important stories in the paper.

Similarly, you should keep your most important real estate above the fold - in the part of  your page that shows up on the screen after the page has been downloaded, and before any scrolling happens. This is why people like banner ads - that's the most valuable part of your page. Don't give it away.

In that crucial top part of your page, you should have:

- A navigational menu
- Your logo, kept small and preferably in the top left corner
- A title that will hook your viewer
- The first part of your site's content

Besides this content, you should have - white space. Look at the bulleted points above. They stand out nicely against the rest of the text, right? You see them long before the items in the middle of any given paragraph. That's because bullets are designed to take advantage of white space.

Your most important points should always be surrounded by white space.

Color and Design

White space doesn't necessarily mean your site should be white; in fact, white backgrounds are sometimes harder to read. Choose light colors for the background of your site, and make sure your font is legible on more than one computer with more than one browser.

If you've done everything recommended up to this point, your home page should consist of:

- A menu at the top of the page
- Content right down the middle
- A second menu or more information down the left side of the page
- Room for a sidebar or ads down the right side of the page
- A second menu or room for information about you and your business along the bottom of the page.

Each of these items should be separated from the others clearly by significant white space or by a graphic line. You shouldn't get any fancier than that.

If you have items or sidebars you want to offset from the rest of the site, you can use a different background color that doesn't contrast harshly with your main color - yellows often work well for this. Break up long articles, and if you have big chunks of paragraphs, try to break them into smaller paragraphs.

Most importantly, you don't need any bells or whistles for your site at all. Keep it simple.

Once your site's been cleaned up, have someone try to browse it while you watch. If they have an easier time finding what they're seeking, you've done your job right.

Keep Them Coming Back: Fresh Content Every Week

Once you've got a pretty site, though, customer loyalty still isn't guaranteed. Why? Because what people are looking for is content. The Internet is all about information.

But if you're the average busy webmaster, you don't have the time to write tons of fresh content on a weekly or even monthly basis to post to each site you manage. The answer to this: private label rights articles you can get for example at www.YourOwnArticles.com .

These are articles purchased in bulk that contain good content for your website, and that are pre-optimized for your keywords. Once you purchase them, you own private label rights rights. You can add or delete text, change text, customize it for your website, even publish them on your site or others with your name listed as the author.

The cleanest website won't get your customers to keep coming to you. But great, regularly-published, fresh content will.

Pain Management...FibromyalgiaFriday, October 12, 2007
For those who missed my earlier articles, here is one that gives an overview of fibromyalgia syndrome.

Pain Management: Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), or fibromyalgia for short, is a musculoskeletal disorder that causes pain in the muscles, ligaments, and tendons -- -the soft fibrous tissues in the body. Fibromyalgia symptoms vary from person to person but people with the condition usually experience pain most acutely during rest.

FMS can occur in people of any age, but more women than men have FMS.

What Are the Symptoms of Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia symptoms vary from person to person, but the most common symptoms are:

  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances

Many people with fibromyalgia say that their entire bodies ache as if they have the flu. Their muscles may feel like they have been pulled or overworked. Sometimes the muscles twitch or burn.

What Causes Fibromyalgia?

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not known, but there are triggering events that may make the condition more likely to occur. Some triggers include:

  • Infection (viral or bacterial)
  • Automobile accidents
  • Development of another disorder (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or hypothyroidism, for example)

While these triggering events probably do not cause fibromyalgia, they may awaken a physiological abnormality that was already present but previously unnoticed.

Can Fibromyalgia Be Prevented?

There is no known way to prevent fibromyalgia. However, maintaining a good diet, doing safe exercise, and getting adequate rest are important to prevent any medical condition, including fibromyalgia.

How Is Fibromyalgia Diagnosed?

Doctors apply pressure on 18 tender point sites on the patient's body to diagnose fibromyalgia. Patients must have chronic, widespread, musculoskeletal pain that lasts longer than three months in all four quadrants of the body. These quadrants are above and below the waist and on both sides of the body. In addition, back pain of some kind must be present.

How Is Fibromyalgia Treated?

Traditional treatments for fibromyalgia are meant to improve sleep quality and limit pain.

The FDA has approved Lyrica as the first drug treatment for fibromyalgia. It reduces pain and improves daily functions for some patients. The drug's most common side effects include mild to moderate dizziness and sleepiness. Lyrica can also cause blurry vision and trouble concentrating. The FDA advises patients to talk to their doctor about whether the use of Lyrica may impair their ability to drive.

In many cases, medications to increase the body's level of serotonin and norepinephrine (neurotransmitters that modulate sleep, pain and immune system function) are prescribed in low doses. Some of the medicines used to aid sleep include Ambien, Klonopin and Desyrel.

In addition to medications, most people with fibromyalgia will need to use other treatment methods as well. These may include:

Lifestyle modifications may help people with fibromyalgia conserve energy and minimize pain. A main component of lifestyle management is listening to your body and not trying to over-do-it. Your doctor may be able to help you develop strategies to manage your lifestyle, or may refer you to a therapist who can work with you to change your daily activities to suit your situation.

What is Traffic and How Can You Get Some? Part IVSaturday, September 29, 2007
What Is Traffic And How Can You Get Some Part 4 of 4
(c) Charlie Page
http://www.RealWorldTactics.com
------------------------------------------------------

This week we complete our multi-part series on real
world ways to get traffic to your site.

There are basically two ways to get traffic.

1. Free methods that take a long time to work.
2. Paid methods that work fast.

This week we look at two final ways to get very
responsive traffic - also known as people who are VERY
interested in your offer - to any website you promote.

--------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT: Please don't think that these tactics
don't apply to beginning marketers. I know people
who did these very things only weeks after going
online, and are doing very well today. You *can*
do this.
--------------------------------------------------

Here now are the final two entries in our 'how to get
traffic' series.

>>> TELESEMINARS

Teleseminars might just be the perfect way to market
online. That's a bold statement, so let me back it up.

Teleseminars offer these benefits over any other form
of marketing.

NOTE: There have been books and courses written about
the benefits of marketing with teleseminars, so I'll
just cover my personal top four reasons.

1. Teleseminars are personal. When people listen to
your teleseminar they are hearing both the information
you want to convey as well as what you believe about
that information. They get to hear your soul as well as
your mind.

2. Teleseminars are easy to consume. Finding time to
read a book can be hard. Finding time to listen is
easy. Listening can be done at the gym, in the car, or
while doing almost any other activity.

3. Teleseminars are entertaining. Sound is powerful,
and adding music or other sounds to a teleseminar is
easy and makes your teleseminar stand out.

4. Teleseminars allow you to say more. No pun intended.
While people find it hard to read a 5000 word sales
letter, they will think nothing of listening for an
hour if the material is interesting and informative.

So, how can *you* profit from teleseminars? Here are
two ideas to get you started.

Idea 1 - Interview and expert and sell the audio. You
can sell seats to the live teleseminar, the audio after
the teleseminar, or both!

Idea 2 - Sell an existing teleseminar. Find a
teleseminar with resale rights and create a product
from that audio.

HINT: Want to find teleseminars with resale rights
easily? Type this into Google (including the quotes).

teleseminar + "resale rights"

Idea 3 - Create a teleseminar that highlights your
product. This doesn't need to be a pitch-fest, but
rather a verbal form of your best case for why your
product helps people.

No matter how you do it, marketing with teleseminars
(or even marketing teleseminars themselves!) is fun and
very profitable.

The KING of teleseminars is Alex Mandossian. Find his
information and devour every word.

>>> YOUR OWN AFFILIATE PROGRAM

Want to sell more products than ever before and NEVER
pay a dime for advertising?

If that sounds too good to be true, it's not.

By developing an army of active affiliates, you are
paying in commissions what you would have paid in ads,
but - and get this because it's powerful - you only pay
AFTER the sale is made!

Sharing how to run a great affiliate program would fill
a book, so I'll share here my top three tips to help
you maximize profits with affiliates.

Tip 1 - Make your program easy to join. Your terms
should be clear, your links easy to use, and your
affiliate center easy to access. Be sure there is a
'lost password' function too so you don't have to
answer tons of "I lost my password" emails.

Tip 2 - Be accessible. Most affiliates will not have
questions. But when affiliates need help, help them.
After all, they are making money for you!

Tip 3 - Provide tools. Make sure your affiliate center
includes ads, links, banners, and more to help
affiliates sell the way that's most comfortable for
them.

While there is no such thing as great free advertising,
if you look at affiliate commissions as the expense you
choose instead of buying ads, it can be a wildly
profitable venture.

I hope these tips help you achieve your goals and
dreams online.

What Is Traffic And How Can You Get Some Part 3 of 4
(c) Charlie Page
http://www.RealWorldTactics.com
------------------------------------------------------

This week we continue our multi-part series on real
world ways to get traffic to your site.

There are basically two ways to get traffic.

1. Free methods that take a long time to work.
2. Paid methods that work fast.

In the last issue, we looked at ezine advertising and
pay per click.

This week we look at how to maximize your investment
with these powerful methods.

EMAIL MARKETING

Email marketing is without any doubt THE most powerful
form of paid advertising online.

What most people miss is that there are many ways to
accomplish email marketing for their site.

Just look at these ways in which email marketing can
help you sell more online.

* Ezine advertising - ads are sent via email
* Joint ventures - Basically an ad to a private list
* Rented lists - Again, and ad to a list you rent
* Autoresponders - all follow up systems use email
* Ezine publishing - ezines are delivered via email
* Blog post announcements - usually delivered via email

If you are not using email in your marketing now, let
me offer these tips on how you can start using it
today.

1. Create a follow up system for your site.

The BEST selling sites online convert about 10% of
visitors to buyers on the first visit. This leaves us
with one all-important question ...

What happens to the other 90%?

Basically, one of two things happens to visitors who
come to your site but don't buy the first time.

1. They forget about you, never to return.
2. They do return and buy what you sell.

How can you make sure that your site falls into the
second group, the group that makes sales?

You *remind* them to return via email.

In my years online I've found that there are about five
core principles that work every time. And I do mean
every time.

One of those truths is this ... if your site does not
follow up via email, you ARE losing sales and money.

No doubt about it.

Happily, you can fix that and fix it today. Use this
link to discover how easy it is to create a follow up
system today (not next week or month but today!)

http://www.realworldtactics.com/followup.html

JOINT VENTURES

Joint ventures used to mean an arrangement between two
people where they both did about half the work and
split the profits. Ideally, they had complimentary
skills such as one being a programmer and the other a
marketer.

Today, the term 'Joint Venture' has devolved into a
situation where one person has a mailing list and the
other wants to sell their product and will pay a very
high commission.

And that's okay.

So how do YOU profit from joint ventures? Here's my
short list of things to do - and things to avoid - when
it comes to joint ventures.

Remember, these are guidelines based on what I have
seen work, not hard and fast rules.

Use this list and, over time, it will help make you
more profits than you can imagine.

Do ...

* Create a list of joint venture partners you want.
* Send an email introducing yourself and asking if
they are interested in a JV at some point.
* Tell them what's in it for them.
* Keep your emails to them short.
* Create a web page where they can learn more.
* Get interested JV partners to join a list of JV
  announcements.
* Make more than one offer. Not every offer is
right for every partner, but time can become your
  ally if you are persistent.
* Post your JV offer to forums that allow such posts.
* Be creative. Not everyone is motivated by money only.
* Use the phone. Limit yourself to email and you
won't get as many JVs as if you email *and* call.
* Give partners lots of lead time. Nothing is
worse than getting a great JV offer that has to be
  done tomorrow.
* Provide partners with ready-made marketing tools
like 'copy and paste' emails, banners, and more.

Do Not ...

* Approach people to joint venture with you on
products that they can become an affiliate for
  themselves.
* Buy someone's product thinking that doing so
will obligate them to JV with you.
* Send very long emails with a sales pitch.
* Send too many emails and waste their time.
* Offer anything less than 50% commission.
* Spam your JV offer ... ever.
* Quit - Never quit trying. JVs work and can work
  for you no matter what.
* Think that you can't get a JV because you don't
have a big name. Everyone starts somewhere. You
  can do this.

The keys to success with Joint Ventures are to be
creative, generous, and persistent.

Find the right JV partners with the right offer at the
right time and watch as very good things happen, all
without you having to spend a dime!

In the next issue we'll cover the last two ways to get
paid traffic to your site, teleseminars (yes, they can
work for you!) and creating a powerful affiliate
program.

Until then, apply these words from Winston Churchill to
your marketing.

"The nose of the bulldog is slanted backwards so he can
breathe without letting go"

In other words, when it comes to YOUR success online
... never give up - never surrender your dream!

What is Traffic and How Can You Get Some? Part IISaturday, September 29, 2007
--------------------------------------------------
What Is Traffic And How Can You Get Some Part 2 of 4
(c) Charlie Page
http://www.RealWorldTactics.com
--------------------------------------------------

In our last ezine we looked at ways to get traffic
without spending any money at all. While that is a
worthwhile goal, it is not always realistic for every
person.

Sometimes you need results faster than those methods
allow.

For that situation there is a solution ... paid
traffic.

Let's look at several ways to get traffic to your site
by paying with money instead of time.

>>> Ezine Advertising

I'll bet you knew I'd list this one first. ;)

The reason I love ezine advertising is that it is so
targeted. After all, people who subscribe to golfing
ezines are golfers and want to learn about golf and buy
golf products.

Same holds true for any topic ... health, making money
online, marketing, sewing, fishing. The list goes on
and on.

Basically, you buy an ad in an ezine and the publisher
sends your ad to his or her mailing list of
subscribers.

It often takes a week to place an ad, so plan ahead. If
you shop wisely, you can expect to pay about $100 for a
solo ad to about 50,000 subscribers.

The two resources I offer regarding ezines are a book I
wrote called "How to make money with ezine advertising"
and my membership site, the Directory of Ezines. Here
are the URLs if you are interested.

>>>> Pay Per Click

Pay per click is when you pay a search engine - usually
Google or Yahoo - to display ads on the page they show
to people who search.

The way it works is this. You go to a search engine,
let's say Google, and create an account. That's free.

Then you tell Google that you will pay X for every
visitor they send who searches on a particular keyword.

That can be one word like "money" or a phrase like
"make money on the Internet using my computer". Both
are considered a "keyword" by the search engines.

With pay per click you can set a budget of what to
spend and the search engine will send you that much
traffic and no more.

EXAMPLE: You bid 50 cents per click on the keyword
"recipe" and set a budget of $10 per day. Google sends
20 visitors a day and no more.

--------------------------------------------------
HINT: 20 visitors a day might sound small, but if you
convert 10% of them to customers you make 2 sales. If
you sell a recipe book (to follow the example) for $45
you make $90 and spend only $10 on the clicks.
--------------------------------------------------

The advantages here are that pay per click creates
almost immediate results when done right and it is
highly targeted.

You can expect to pay about 50 cents per click unless
you are targeting very competitive keywords.

The downside is that there is a ton of competition and
something called 'click fraud' is causing problems.

Click fraud is when people click your ad even when they
have no interest at all in your product. Weird I know
(why would they waste their time?) but it happens and
you pay for that click no matter what.

The king of pay per click is Perry Marshall. You can
find his excellent books about it at ...

http://www.perrymarshall.com

These two methods can become the backbone of any
marketing plan, so we'll stop here for this week and
give you time to check out those resources.

In the next issue we'll continue with paid traffic
sources, including ...

* Email Marketing
* Joint Ventures
* Teleseminars
* Affiliate Marketing

Until then, check out ezines and pay per click. They
really do work, and can form the a firm foundation for
your long term success.

And having a firm foundation can make all the
difference!

What is Traffic and How Can You Get Some?Saturday, September 29, 2007
I found this article by Charlie Page to be easy to understand and helpful.

What Is Traffic And How Can You Get Some Part 1 (c) Charlie Page
http://www.RealWorldTactics.com
------------------------------------------------------

When it comes to making money online there are three elements that everyone MUST have in order to succeed.

1. Something to sell
2. A website that makes the sale and collects the money
3. People coming to that site and buying

Getting items 1 and 2 set up and in place are as easy as pie. In fact, you can have these in place in the next 10 minutes by becoming an affiliate.

But it's that third element, getting REAL people to come to your site and buy something, that has most people stumped.

Getting visitors to your site is called, in Internet terms, getting traffic. And there is no other topic on which so much is written, and so much is wrong.

Being a fairly simple minded fellow, I like to keep things simple and easy to understand. In that light, here are some thoughts on understanding, and getting, traffic.

There are only two types of traffic.

1. Free Traffic
2. Paid Traffic

What this means is that you are going to have to buy traffic through either your efforts (free traffic) or your pocketbook (paid traffic)

Let's look at each and see how they work. This week we focus on free traffic.

>> Free Traffic <<

If ever there was a siren song of the digital age, 'free traffic' is it.

Can you really get absolutely free traffic to your site? Sure. Can you build a business based on this traffic? Yes.

BUT - and there is always a but - you will have to learn how to get it and work hard as well. If that's okay with you, let's look at how it works.

Here are the main sources of free traffic, along with a word about each.

>>> SEARCH ENGINES - Often touted as the #1 way to get
free traffic, the tactic here is to get your site listed in the venerated 'top ten' search results. You can't trick the search engines, so the best way to do this is to provide content, and lots of it.

If your site is helpful to human readers you will do well. If you try and outsmart the search engines to get traffic you will go broke buying the latest and greatest thingy that simply won't work, or won't work long.

Create a CONTENT RICH site and the search engines will reward you by displaying that site when people search for the type of information you provide.

>>> FREE ADS - Free ads are a mixed blessing. They are
free, which is good. They usually don't work, which is bad.

If you can get a free ad in a place where ads are usually sold, like the free ad you get for subscribing to some ezines or classified ad sites that are visited by people, then it might be worth the time.

BUT - ad blasters and automated submitters do not work in testing and are to be avoided.

>>> ARTICLES - Without a doubt, marketing with articles
is the #1 free traffic method. You don't need to be Hemmingway to do this.

All you have to do is write a short article - about 500 words works best - that describes a problem people face and also provides ways to solve that problem.

Once your article is written, you can submit it to article directories, ezines, other website owners, and more to get the widest possible distribution.

Write and submit an article a week and very soon you will get very interested visitors who are proven to buy.

>>> VIRAL MARKETING - Viral marketing basically means
creating something of value that others can give away while making sure you benefit from it being given away.

The most common form of this is a short booklet.

Creating a viral marketing booklet is a win-win situation. You win because the links in the product are yours, so you get paid when people click. Readers win because you provide valuable information and they can give the
booklet free from their website.

Create a viral report and get visitors from the links inside the report, as well as visitors who want to give the report to others.

>>> PUBLISH AN EZINE - Publishing an ezine is highly
profitable and easy to do. All you need to do is gather, or write, articles about a specific subject and publish an ezine (like the one you are reading now) on a schedule. That might mean every week, or every month.

You can get great articles from all sorts of places, like article directories or ezine directories.

Publish an ezine, offer it to everyone in your address book and who visits your site, and watch your traffic grow.

>>> PUBLISH A BLOG

This is super easy today. If you have a hosting account, the chances are you have blogging software on that account free. If not, you can always use Blogger.

The basic idea here is the same as a website ... provide great content and the search engines send people.

The advantage to a blog is that you can have some interactivity by letting people comment, and you can easily structure your blog for easy reading.

Set up a blog today, provide great content, and the search engines will send traffic over time.

>>> PARTICIPATE ON FORUMS

This is an excellent, and free, way to earn while you learn. The idea here is to visit forums that are specific to your site and post questions or make comments.

This works well if you understand reciprocity and are wiling to give a bit before you receive. It does not work at all if your forum post is simply an ad in disguise.

Once forum members get to know and trust you a bit they will visit the site you list in your signature area. If you visit the forums specific to your topic of interest and get involved, you will get very targeted free
traffic on a steady basis.

Other methods of getting traffic free include

* Provide endorsements
* Press releases
* Linking
* And more

You can read about most of these methods at http://www.realworldtactics.com Just look on the home page for the 'articles' link.

As you can see, there are many ways to get free traffic to your site. These methods take time that could be spent doing other things.

But if you have more time than money at this point in your life (and we've all been there) these techniques will work to get some traffic to your site.

I hope they work for you too.

Next week we are going to look at ways to get paid traffic, so stayed tuned!

Why Doesn't Pay Per Click Advertising Work?Thursday, September 27, 2007

Food for Thought
by Dr. Kevin Nunley

Why Doesn't Pay-Per-Click Advertising Work?

About twice a day I get a note from people saying I'm doing a ton of advertising with pay-per-click search engines. I get 1,000 people a day to my site and nobody buys. What is wrong with my site?

Often, NOTHING is wrong with the site. The real problem seems to be with PPC search engines. While they work magnificently for some businesses, they work poorly for others.

For some reason nobody has yet explained to me, the masses of folks who come from PPC's have a 15 to 20 second look around your site, then leave without buying anything.

There are three solutions to this problem.

1. Instead of going for the order, try to get PPC traffic to sign up for your newsletter or email updates. People who have never heard of you before are unlikely to buy. People who have been reading your newsletter for weeks are much more likely to place their order.

2. Sell an item or service people buy on impulse. Things that are cheap and "feel good" have the advantage.

3. Stop spending all your ad budget on PPC's. Spread the money around a bit. Advertise in ezines, get on mainstream search engines, send out your own article with your ad at the end.

Food For ThoughtThursday, September 27, 2007

Food for Thought
by Dr. Kevin Nunley

Keep Your Offer Simple

When things get complicated, customers bolt.

Have you ever been to a website that makes an offer, then compounds it with stipulations, overwhelming you with complicated wording and conditions? If so, you probably didn't stay there long.

On the web, people are always a little more wary of the products and offers. They can't see or touch them, so they have to rely on the information you provide to judge whether or not they want what you have to offer.

But things like complicated wording, too many instructions, too many steps, etc. will all make potential customers suspicious. They'll wonder what you're trying to hide in all those unnecessary words and steps.

Or, those potential customers will simply tire of sorting through all the instructions and stipulations associated with your offer. After all, they can always find another site that won't require them to decipher a code to get what they want.

Use simple wording, short sentences, and brief paragraphs to keep the information you need to convey concise, easy-to-read, and simple to understand. And if you offer a bonus, don't require potential customers to jump through hoops to get it.

Helpful Hints for Those With Irritable Bowel SyndromeSunday, August 5, 2007
Here are some hints for those with irritable bowel syndrome, which is often associated with fibromyalgia.

Chew your food slowly and thoroughly. If you eat too fast you will swallow air, plus your digestion actually begins in your mouth. Your saliva starts the breakdown of food.

Drink fresh water frequently throughout the day, but don't drink it ice cold. Limit the amount you drink with meals so your food can digest better. Your stomach acids will not be diluted with too much fluid.

Don't chew gum because it can cause you to swallow air.

Eat small portions of food at one sitting, as large portions are more difficult to digest and can cause an attack of IBS.

Cooked fruits and vegetables are more easily digested than raw ones.

Limit your intake of dairy products, as many people have trouble digesting the lactose. You can buy tablets which will help you digest dairy products if you can't do without them.

Use fat-free salad dressings or mayonnaise.

Try acidophilus capsules. These help normalize your intestines and may decrease diarrhea in some people.

Stay active after eating. Do not lie down for 2-3 hours after eating.

Exercise for about 30 minutes a day, most days. This will help your body function better.

Eat frequent small snacks to keep food in your system.

Take a fiber supplement. You may need to experiment with different types of fiber and different brands to find one that helps you.

Limit caffeinated beverages and carbonated beverages.

I hope these hints are helpful.

1. Place copies of your circular on bulletin boards throughout your community, such as in coin-operated laundries, grocery stores, barber shops, etc. Concentrate of Fridays and Saturdays when shopping increases.

2. Check with local newspapers. Before going to press, many smaller newspapers have space left that needs filling.. Your ad may be just the right size to occupy this unfilled space and they will run it free.

3. Place your circulars on windshields of parked autos, Youngsters will be happy to do this for you for a dollar or two. Check first with city ordinances to see if this is permitted in your locality.

4. Leave sales literature on doorsteps of homes & businesses in your area. Do this on weekends in residential areas; weekdays for businesses.

5. Have your best pulling 1 inch or 2 inch ad made into a rubber stamp. Stamp this on envelopes of all of your outgoing mail.. Check rubber stamp dealer's ads in current mail order publications for price information.

7. If you publish a mail order magazine, newspaper, adsheet, etc., contact other publishers, If your circulation is equal to theirs, many will be happy to exchange an equal amount of ad space with you.

8. Many publishers will give you free adspace for mailing a few copies of their publication. Simply write to them and ask if they wi
